Non-routine Flight Operations

A330 Test Flight

Non-routine flying is a broader operational category that includes positioning and ferry flights, training flights, customer demonstrations, end-of-lease, and maintenance check flights. My doctoral research study focused on the safety of post-maintenance test flight operations.

My thesis generated new insights into major test flight accidents and a new grounded theory about accident causation. The study also uncovered critical adaptive failures in human-machine interactions that challenge current design assumptions and system architectures.

My current activity focuses on extending the research scope to other types of Non-routine Flight Operations and lower MTOW classes (e.g. commercial turboprop and business jet airplanes) that were excluded from the original study.
